Google “talent” and within three seconds you will be connected to 154,000,000 results. Since the Merriam-Webster dictionary is number one, let’s begin there: “the natural endowments of a person, a special often athletic, creative, or artistic aptitude. Also, general intelligence or mental power: ABILITY.”

Athletic talent is mentioned first because it’s obvious: Who can dispute the talent of a Tiger Woods or a Michael Phelps? Success in athletics is defined in precise terms: a scorecard of records, competitions won, and records set and broken.

Executive talent is a little harder to define, but you know it when you see it.

Dennis Carey: When leaders forget the human capital of a deal

During the days of speculation over the Microsoft/Yahoo merger, I made a comment to a reporter for Dow Jones that Carl Icahn (or any activist shareholder) winning control over Yahoo could undermine the company’s ability to function. That thought was reinforced when he also was spurned by Biogen Idec.

Bio of Dennis Carey - Leading Executive Recruiter


Recruiting CEOs and corporate directors for some of the largest companies in the world is no simple task. It takes significant knowledge of business trends and models to identify the leaders who can achieve a company’s complex goals. After all, the downfall or success of a company greatly lies on the quality of top-level management.

Dennis Carey takes on this responsibility with great expertise; having already conducted searches for the leaders of several companies including American Standard, 3M, Tyco International, and MCI, among others. He has also conducted several board director searches for numerous companies such as Air Products, CBS, Allied Signal, Amgen, Tyco International, AmerisourceBergen, Rohm and Haas, GlaxoSmithKline, CIGNA, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lunch, UNOCAL, and V.F. Corporation.

Aside from that, Dennis has completed director searches for a number of spin off companies including, NCR, AT&T, and Sprint (2006). He was also responsible for recruiting the entire board of Covidian and Tyco Electronics, which are both spin offs of TYCO.

Dennis Carey’s previous work experience include serving as managing director at Hay Management Consultants; Secretary of Labor and Industry to Governor Pierre S. Dupont IV; and vice president of the University of Delaware.

Three organizations sprung up because of Dennis’ leadership. These are the G100, Chairman Academy, and the CEO Academy. He also co-founded Wharton’s Director's Institute, and the Wharton Board Excellence Award Program.

At present, Dennis serves as managing director of AirClic, The Edgewater Funds, and Wharton’s Director's Institute. He also serves as an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association; a position he has been holding since 1981.

Dennis Carey holds a Ph.D. in finance and administration from the University of Maryland. He was also a post-doctoral Fellow at Harvard University in 1982-1983 and conducted visiting Fellowships at Princeton Theological Seminary and the ECC.

Dennis has authored several articles related to corporate governance, directory recruitment, spin off business strategies (McKinsey Quarterly), and board compensation (Directors & Boards magazine). CEO Succession, The Human Side of M & A, and How to Run a Company, are three books published under his name, further solidifying the fact that he is one of the experts of the recruitment industry.
